Sanctions on imports are not good sign for economy

Imports are considered to be a key factor in determining the rate of growth of a country’s economy. Sadly, Pakistan has been a victim of bans being imposed. Some for political while others for inappropriate practices. Although the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan is still living in a shell. The authorities claim that the downward trend faced by Pakistan in exports is due to the fall of prices in the international markets. It is a global issue and Pakistan is not alone to face such losses. The facts on the other hand state against this claim.

Export of fruits and vegetables across the border

Although Iran has permitted the imports of kinnow from Pakistan, but unfortunately it is that time of year when the season of kinnow is almost over now. This opportunity will not be availed to its fullest because of this reason. Waheed Ahmed, patron-in-chief of Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchant Association (PFVA) while giving insight on the situation shared his views. He said that the export owing to the above-mentioned limitation will lie between 5000 to 10,000 tons.

He also shed light on some bitter facts stating that Pakistani markets remain flooded with Iranian fruits and vegetables throughout the year. They are either smuggled or imported through legal channels from borders. Higher authorities are not showing interest in this matter at all, he added. Exports to Iran are limited. Traders are deprived to export approx. 70,000 tons per season to the neighbouring country. This is causing huge loss as the traders have to look towards other options which are other countries farther away. This is a jolt to the economy.

Ban on import of shrimps by US

Several episodes of bans have been reported on the imports of Pakistan. The recent one is from the United States. US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) recently imposed a ban on import of shrimps from Pakistan. Not the only US, but Saudi Arabia has also strictly banned import of shrimps in the past. The USFDA have claimed that the local Pakistani fishing industry does not ensure the inclusion of turtle excluders in their fishing nets. The ban has taken effect from May 1, 2017.

Ban on import of kinnow lifted by Iran

Pakistan was at back foot facing a ban on import of kinnows to Iran for almost six years. Pakistani embassy in Tehran has informed that Iran has decided to lift the ban partially. For a defined period of time, kinnow can be exported only through land.

However, export through sea or air cargo will not be permissible. For this purpose, the border markets of Iranian province Sistan and Baluchistan are the most favorable option.

What is the way forward?

The need of the hour is to highlight the current situation in front of Iranian government. Appeal the government to lift imposed ban on sea and air cargo. It will be in the greater interest of both the countries and bring people together. Companies like Pakistan Cargo 4 U plays vital role in shipping the cargo from UK to Pakistan and other countries.
