All the major airports across the UK have to face delays and disruptions in the cargo flights due to the staff strike on the Christmas eve. The BA cabin crew staff and the airport staff has decided to take days off on the weekends. They will not entertain the flights over the festive weekend holidays and it is expected that the flights will be disrupted by more than 1500 baggage handlers, staff chief and Air cargo crew working on around 18 airports across the UK. The Unite Union and its staff employed by the Swiss port, they actually work on behalf of the airlines has decided to walk out for around 48 hours on 23rd of December and 24th just before the Christmas festival and these airports are Stansted, Luton, Gatwick, Leeds-Bradford, Manchester, Cardiff, Belfast, Glasgow and Edinburgh, intend to face disruptions. At the largest business hub of the UK, Heathrow also has a disruption issue as the cargo workers at the airport announced to also join the strike.
The national officer for the civil air transport for unite, Oliver Richardson has argued that the action against the holiday days as a very last option. He further said that they also know that this is very busy time on the UK airports and we don’t want to create any kind of mess on the day but we are confident that the entire staff will be cooperative and supportive during all this cold season.
The Swiss Port also handles all the baggage, check-in and handling operations on the Birmingham, Southampton and new Castle airports in the result of strike, these airports will be among the most affected airports in the UK on this Christmas. It is expected that around 2500 staff is going on strike on this Christmas. It has been clearly confirmed by the Swiss port officials that the strike will take place at every cost and they will not negotiate on any terms. More than 62 percent employees at Swiss port announced that they will not accept the three years pay contract and union has urged that the staff will keep the pace with inflation and they might accept the terms and conditions which has a great offering on freezing overtime payments
The airports said that they would have to implement several actions several plans to maintain the operation and keep the disruption at the lowest possible level that will help in taking cargo from UK across the globe and same is the case of other airports. The airport authorities believe that the issue will be settled soon and if it continues for long than the company has all its work done and completed.
The airport authorities further explain that they have any plans ready to overcome this issue actually. The MAG spokesperson said that they are aware of these issues but it is the responsibility of Swissport to consider their contingency plan and try to reduce the chances of any disruption on the airports.
At the Gatwick airport, the operations of the organisation are very limited and they only serve virgin Atlantic airlines so it is highly likely that the passengers using Virgin services will be affected.
