On Monday the sea traffic at the South Asia Port Terminal (SAPT) remained suspended after the collision of two container vessels at Karachi Port. Almost a dozen containers fell into the sea after the ship called ‘Tolten’ owned by Hapeg-Lloyd and Hamburg Bay collided in Karachi.
This could have gotten worse as the administration averted the possible damage to the cranes installed at the berth through a timely operation. The video footage of the incident was recorded by the worker at the port.
Pakistan’s two key oil importing facilities at Karachi Port and Port Qasim face extreme congestion due to port constraints and increase in road and sea transport which results in economic loss and higher financing costs.
The Karachi port has handled more ships during July-December of the current fiscal year, with a total of 1,066 vessels called at the port, as against 957 ships handled in the same period last year.
During the first six months of the current fiscal, the port handled 484 containers ships, 125 bulk cargo vessels, 172 general cargo ships and 285 oil tankers. If your online order is suddenly delayed, you may have just watched it go floating out into the open ocean. Sorry about that.
