Recently, there has been a report of an unidentified owner running a secretive air freight service in Wilmington Air Park – a cargo airport in Ohio – which was in use by DHL until 2008.
At that time, an announcement was made by the company of leaving its two runaways and all sort of warehouse space, after cutting down over 7,500 jobs and abandoning its operation.
A new tenant, with its ID unknown as of yet, took up the place and from September, started operating four flights a day to four different airports. Under the name of Air Transport Services Group, this company has started its work with a few leased Boeing 767s.
The main reason behind this suspicion is that all the airports it’s flying to have, co-incidentally, Amazon distribution facilities within 60 miles. These airports are Allentown, PA, Ontario, CA, Tampa and Oakland (OAK), although Amazon has 75 centres.
All of these are near to every major population centre in the United States, providing the vast range of services like door-to-door cargo, to its clients. But still, some say Amazon is behind these flights and have started its own air freight service.
As of yet, Amazon has neither denied nor confirmed any allegations in this regard. Amazon is one of the largest logistics company in the world and its running its own shipping service and often tries out some new programs every now and then, so if they are trying out another cheaper cargo alternative, then it’s ok.
